Phoenix in the rain!

Saturday Mixed Div 3

Potters Green at home this week. Lovely warm sunshine to start with but by the time we got to the middle 4 it was back to the cold heavy rain. Spare a thought for poor Grace, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone so wet after a game! Much like the weather, we started full of optimism but sadly that didn’t last as we fell to a 17 shot defeat. Not the ideal home result but 6 winners and 6 points leaves us sitting nicely in 4th position. Special mention to Jabbs for an excellent 21-5 card, just unfortunate that it wasn’t enough on the day. Away to top of the league next so a tough week ahead. Congratulations to Potters, they always bowl our green well and deserved to win.

Mens Midweek Div 2

We faired better in our midweek game this week, recording an excellent 28 shot and 7-3 victory over a good Bulkington side. Best card was Matt’s 21-4 but special mention has to be for Dennis Casey for carding his first ever victory having only started the game last year. Well bowled Dennis!! I’m sure there’s many more to come. This was a really good team performance however the 7 very welcome points still leaves us rooted at the bottom of the table. With games in hand I’d expect to see us climbing the table soon!

Mens Thursday Div B

A narrow 21-20 win from Chris Tonks on debut helped the team to a stunning 18 shots and 9 points to 2 victory over Standard A. It’s been several years since we managed a win at Standard so this really was a very special team performance. Massive congratulations to everyone involved! The 9 points lifts us to a very creditable 4th place just 3 points off the leaders. I’m also pleased to welcome Chris’s dad, Jeff Tonks, to our squad. Jeff has offered to help out when we’re short but I’m sure it won’t take us too long to get Jeff playing regularly! Welcome to the Foxes Jeff!!

Mens Sunday Div B

A bye this week leaves us firmly rooted to the bottom of the league, some 6 points from safety. We’ll need to make the most of our games in hand to climb to safety.

Ladies Thursday Div C

A postponement left our ladies without a game this week and lying in 9th place but with a game in hand on most of the teams above them and just 9 points off second place.

New raised flower beds

Green Maintenance

Another busy week on and around the green with completion of our new flower beds and more treatment to the playing surface.

We want to be proud of our facilities both on and off the green hence the investment in the new flower beds. They’ll look lovely come the Summer.

The green has undergone it’s first of 10 treatments with a “compost tea” solution which is designed to improve microbial life, nutrient recycling and help disease suppression. This is very much in line with our aims to improve the health of the bowling green through encouragement of natural processes rather than the traditional chemicals and heavy sand top dressing. Whilst not an overnight cure for all issues, a healthy soil structure will result in a high quality, durable green in future seasons.

Looking good after cutting 11/05/2019

In addition to the compost tea application, we have also applied a dose of CMS Shoot (molasses) which is a natural fertiliser and bio stimulant.

Completing the works on the green is application of concentrated liquid seaweed, another excellent bio stimulant and very widely used on top golf course greens.
